A panel is the chosen set of lenses measuring a vault — the declared measurement configuration. It fixes which perspectives every record in that vault is seen through.

No — not reliably. To compare constellations you need the SAME perspectives. A panel fixes the lens set for a whole vault, so every record is seen through the same eyes and their slots line up. The panel is what makes a vault's records comparable at all.

A single lens is one way of seeing. A panel is the chosen set of lenses that measures an entire vault — the declared measurement configuration. It answers: through which perspectives will every record here be seen?

Why the panel has to be fixed

If different records were measured by different lenses, their constellations wouldn’t line up — you couldn’t compare slot to slot, and the four verbs would have nothing consistent to operate on. By fixing the panel for the vault, Calyx guarantees that every record shares the same coordinate system of perspectives.

Choosing the panel well matters: lenses that all see the same thing are redundant, while a diverse panel captures more of the meaning. That tension is exactly what the Differentiate verb later measures — “how many bits does each lens actually add?” — so a panel can be earned rather than guessed. The panel is also what search turns into retrieval.
